TREASURES FROM THE BELHAVEN MUSEUM

We are in the Yuletide week, rapidly drawing near Christmas Day itself. The anxiety in the air is palpable, almost perceptible to the naked eye. The disquietude of shopping, traveling and planning to make everything associated with the day "perfect" is enough to provide more that your recommended daily allowance of stress. As the last days slip closer, everyone seems to be more than just a little bit anxious, more than just a little ready for a cup of eggnog--or two.

The problem with the holidays seems to be that we make the mistake of turning our everyday lives into tedium and our special days into pandemonium. We think that time is a long road and our lives simply a trek along it. I think that it might be closer to the truth to say that time is a river and our lives simply a swift trip downstream. Whatever the case, victims of overstressed holiday delirium might well benefit from an old-fashioned "attitude adjustment" in this and the other eleven months of the year.

Eva Blount Way was famous for her button collection. For her, they served as a sort of psychic "tonic" or "vitamin" that helped her through the doldrums and the storm equally well. In fact, she prepared a display of her button "VITAMINS" for public consumption along with her advice for dealing with the troubles of life:

"TAKE ONE PEEP EVERY DAY. TAKE A GOOD LOOK ON SUNDAY. GUARANTEED TO CURE THE BLUES, MENTAL TROUBLES. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, ALL CAUSED FROM WORRY. TAKE A TIP FROM ME. GET A HOBBY. FIND SOME VITAMINS TO LIVE WITH. THEY ARE A WONDERFUL CURE FOR MANY ILLS."

Come and see this prescription and others in "Granny's Attic," the Belhaven Memorial Museum.
